β€œCross Country Championships Are Won Over the Summer!”

β€œChampionship cross country teams aren't built in the final two months of the season. They're forged through a summer-long commitment to training. For most runners, it's more than a sport β€” it's a lifestyle, built day by day, week by week, season by season.” β€” Pat Tyson

Program Highlights

βœ… No Cuts

Everyone runs, everyone races!

Coed Team

Boys and girls train together and compete at the same meets.

πŸ“ˆ Individualized Training

Workouts tailored to each runner's current fitness level.

πŸ“š Academic Excellence

XC athletes consistently hold the highest average GPA of any sport!

πŸ† Tradition of Success

Cross country is one of Cocoa Beach's most decorated programs.

πŸŽ‰ Fun & Team Bonding

Team trips, beach runs, pasta dinners, games & lifelong friendships.

What You'll Need for Cross Country

  • πŸ‘Ÿ Running Shoes β€” Invest in a quality pair (function over fashion)… check out Running Zone.
  • ⏱️ Wristwatch β€” Must have a built-in stopwatch for training sessions… GPS capability is a bonus.
  • πŸ‘• Apparel β€” Be ready for all weather. Dress in proper athletic gear.
  • πŸ’§ Water Bottle β€” Stay hydrated before, during and after practice.
  • πŸ’ͺ Commitment β€” Show up and work hard!
  • Uniform β€” $30 for singlet & $10 for black shorts (see Coach P).

Athletic Clearance β€” Required

All athletes must complete their Physical & Eligibility Clearance electronically before practicing or racing. That includes a current sports physical (an ECG is also required in Brevard), the required annual online courses, and all paperwork β€” approval can take several days, so don't wait until the last minute.

Sports Physical ($10) & ECG ($20) events via 3D Sports Medicine were held May 30 (Burrell College, Melbourne) and June 6 (Viera High School) for 2026.

Summer Practice

Summer Run Club begins Mon, July 6:

  • Mon: 6:30–7:45 AM @ CB Track
  • Thu: 6:30–7:45 AM @ CB Parking Garage

Summer Team Events: Overnight Team Trip β€’ Golf N Gator Adventure (Mini Golf & Go-Karts) β€’ Surfinista Hangouts β€’ Beach Bonding.

Team Info

Rules, Lettering & Mission

From the Cocoa Beach Cross Country Team Info β€” Rules & Expectations, Lettering Policy, and Team Mission.

Rules & Expectations

  • Handbook Compliance β€” Follow all policies in the Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School and Athletics Handbooks.
  • Substance Use β€” Drugs, alcohol, tobacco, vaping, etc. are prohibited and may result in dismissal.
  • Respect & Conduct β€” Bullying, hazing, or inappropriate behavior online or in person is unacceptable; treat coaches, teammates, and others with respect.
  • Parent Communication & Consequences β€” Parents will be notified of any rule violations, which may result in being withheld from a meet or dismissal from the team.

Attendance & Tardiness

  • Attend every practice and arrive on time.
  • Excused absences must be communicated and approved by the coach at least 24 hours in advance; supporting documentation may be required. If absent from 4+ school periods, athletes may not attend practice but must still email Coach. Do not assume an absence is excused β€” approval is at the coaching staff's discretion.
  • Unexcused absences include any absence not discussed with or approved by the coach, or missing practice due to school discipline.
  • Tardiness: 1–15 minutes late = tardy; 15+ minutes = unexcused absence; 2 unexcused tardies count as 1 unexcused absence.
  • Consequences: 1st & 2nd unexcused absence β€” no action; 3rd & 4th β€” miss the next meet; 5th β€” may be dismissed from the team. Coach discretion applies.

Tryouts & Meet Standards

Tryouts are held during the first week of practice.

  • Returning athletes must run 1 mile under 8:30 to practice off campus.
  • To compete in a 5K, athletes must run a 5K without walking, meet the 5K time standards β€” Girls under 30:00, Boys under 27:00 β€” attend 2+ weeks of practice, and meet the coach's discretion.

Varsity Letter β€” Meet 2 of These

Athletes must also maintain good standing (practice attendance/participation, academics, school/community discipline):

  • Run 50% or more races on Varsity
  • Run in a postseason race (Varsity Conference, District, Region, or State)
  • Run Girls 23:30 or better / Boys 18:30 or better
  • Be a senior who has completed 3 full seasons
  • Coach's discretion

Team Mission

Purpose: We build a character-driven program where team success is the primary goal. Our success is driven by selflessness, strengthened by dedication, and defined by the collective strength of the team.

Performance Principles:

  • Consistency Builds Champions β€” Sustainable effort creates long-term success.
  • Be Competitive β€” Hard work done well feels good β€” and makes everyone better.
  • Rest, Recovery, and Sleep β€” Performance requires intentional restoration.
  • Protect Tomorrow β€” Choose health over fitness.
  • Cultivate Passion β€” Kids are good at what they like, great at what they love.

Daily routines that support the mission β€” including RPR Wake-Up Drills β€” are linked under Quick Links on the homepage. Interested in the Cocoa Beach XC Booster Club? Contact Coach Piaskowy or Marlene White.
